Luka Modrić to Leave Real Madrid at Season’s End, Set for Emotional Farewell at the Bernabéu

Luka Modrić, Real Madrid's most decorated player, has announced his departure from the club at the conclusion of the 2024–2025 season. The 39-year-old Croatian midfielder will play his final home match at the Santiago Bernabéu this weekend against Real Sociedad, where a special tribute is planned to honour his illustrious 13-year tenure with Los Blancos.  

Since joining Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modrić has made nearly 600 appearances, contributing 43 goals and 95 assists. His time at the club has been marked by an unprecedented haul of 28 trophies, including six UEFA Champions League titles, four La Liga championships, and six FIFA Club World Cups. In 2018, he broke the decade-long Messi-Ronaldo duopoly by winning the Ballon d'Or, further cementing his status as one of football's all-time greats. 

Despite limited starts this season, Modrić has remained a vital contributor, amassing over 3,000 minutes across all competitions. His leadership and vision have continued to influence the team's dynamics, even as Real Madrid transitions towards a younger midfield lineup. 

Looking ahead, Modrić has expressed a desire to continue playing, with potential destinations including clubs in Italy's Serie A, Major League Soccer in the United States, and even a possible return to his homeland with Dinamo Zagreb. Additionally, as a minority owner of Swansea City, there is speculation about a move to the English Championship side.  

Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez lauded Modrić as "one of the greatest legends in both the club and world football history," acknowledging his profound impact on the team's success over the past decade.
