Netherlands Launch World Cup Quest with 2–0 Victory in Finland
The Netherlands inaugurated their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign with a confident 2–0 away win over Finland on Saturday.

Memphis Depay struck early, capitalising on a defensive lapse just six minutes into the match. Later in the first half, Denzel Dumfries extended the lead with a clinical finish at the back post.

With this outcome, the Dutch now hold three points in Group G, positioned behind group leaders Poland—who boast six points—and Finland, who have accumulated four from three matches. Under the current qualification format, the group winner will secure direct entry to the 2026 World Cup. Meanwhile, the second-placed team enters a 16-team playoff for one of four remaining spots in the tournament hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada .
