Real Madrid have confirmed that star forward Kylian Mbappé has been hospitalised due to acute gastroenteritis, raising serious doubts about his ability to continue in the Club World Cup.
Mbappé, 26, missed his side’s opening match—a 1-1 draw against Al‑Hilal—after being held out due to a fever. The club revealed he had been ill since Tuesday and was subsequently taken to hospital on Wednesday for tests and treatment.
Head coach Xabi Alonso initially left the door open for Mbappé’s return, stating the forward was “under observation” and that the coaching staff would monitor his condition up until kickoff. However, following Enrique’s post‑match comments, Alonso acknowledged that Mbappé had deteriorated over the preceding forty-eight hours and was now in hospital.
The prognosis for Mbappé’s participation remains unclear, as his status for upcoming Group H fixtures—against Pachuca on June 22 and RB Salzburg on June 27—is uncertain. Real Madrid hope to top the group before facing likely opposition from Juventus or Manchester City in the knockout stage.
While Madrid’s squad faces a setback with Mbappé sidelined, they aimed to capitalise on his stellar debut season, in which he scored 43 goals in 56 appearances, including 31 in La Liga, earning the league’s Golden Boot—his seventh overall and seventh consecutive since 2018.
