Liverpool have officially completed the signing of German midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in what is now the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.
The 22-year-old arrives at Anfield on a long-term contract reportedly worth £200,000 per week. While financial terms have not been publicly disclosed, multiple reports suggest the total package could rise to around £116.5 million—including £16.5 million in performance-based add-ons—surpassing the club’s previous record fee paid for Virgil van Dijk in 2017.
Wirtz, who attracted interest from top European clubs including Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, was a key figure in Leverkusen’s remarkable 2023–24 campaign. He played a crucial role as the club secured a historic domestic double and went unbeaten in the Bundesliga.
Speaking after the move, Wirtz said: “I feel very happy and very proud. I want to try something completely new, to leave the Bundesliga and experience the Premier League.”
A highly regarded talent known for his creativity, intelligence, and versatility, Wirtz is expected to be a central figure in manager Arne Slot’s plans as Liverpool look to build on their recent success and remain competitive on all fronts.
His arrival follows other summer signings including Jeremie Frimpong and Milos Kerkez, further underlining the club’s ambition for the upcoming season.
