Real Madrid have officially confirmed the acquisition of 22‑year‑old Spanish left-back Álvaro Carreras from Benfica, signing him to a six‑year contract running through June 30, 2031.
A product of Real Madrid’s youth system (2017–2020), Carreras later moved to Manchester United in 2020. While at United, he experienced loan spells at Preston North End and Granada before joining Benfica on loan in January 2024. His performances impressed enough for Benfica to make the move permanent in July 2024.
During the 2024–25 season, Carreras established himself as Benfica’s first-choice left-back, delivering standout displays in key Champions League fixtures, including a notable clash with Barcelona. He helped Benfica win the Portuguese League Cup and emerged as one of the team’s most consistent performers.
The transfer fee, reportedly €50 million paid in installments, marks one of Real Madrid’s most significant defensive investments—ranking second only to Dean Huijsen in club history.
Carreras will be formally presented this Tuesday at 13:00 CET at Ciudad Real Madrid, in a ceremony expected to include president Florentino Pérez.
