Liverpool welcomed their record signing, Florian Wirtz, onto the pitch for the first time during a behind-closed-doors friendly match at the AXA Training Centre on Sunday. This unofficial debut marked a significant milestone in the German midfielder’s integration into the squad.
Facing Championship side Stoke City, Liverpool produced a dominant display, running out 5–0 winners. Darwin Núñez stole the spotlight with a first-half hat-trick, supported by Rio Ngumoha’s early strike. Federico Chiesa completed the rout in the closing stages of the match.

Wirtz took the field in a midfield role for the first half, alongside Curtis Jones and prospect Trey Nyoni. The German international showcased composure on the ball and tactical awareness before being substituted at halftime.

The lineup featured Giorgi Mamardashvili in goal, with an unexpected back four: Dominik Szoboszlai at right-back, alongside Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, and Andy Robertson. In attack, Mohamed Salah supported Núñez and Ngumoha. After the break, the coaching staff rotated in second-string players, giving minutes to the likes of Chiesa, Cody Gakpo, Ben Doak, and others from the squad.
This match, though unofficial, provided valuable minutes as Liverpool ramps up preparation for their upcoming pre-season tour. The Reds will now depart for Asia, facing AC Milan in Hong Kong on July 26, followed by a fixture against Yokohama FM in Japan on July 30, before returning for home friendlies against Athletic Club and Crystal Palace.

Under head coach Arne Slot, Liverpool’s pre-season builds toward competitive fixtures beginning mid‑August. This fresh glimpse into Wirtz’s ability suggests he is settling into life at Anfield ahead of what promises to be a pivotal season.
