Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London

Nigeria’s former Head of State, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired, GCFR), passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a private clinic in London, United Kingdom, at the age of 82. His death was confirmed in an announcement issued on social media by his longtime spokesperson, Garba Shehu, on behalf of the family.

The statement read:
“Inna Lillahi Wa Inna Ilaihirrajiuun. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin.”

Buhari led Nigeria twice: initially as military head of state from December 1983 to August 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from May 2015 to May 2023. A retired Major General, he was well known for his anti-corruption policies, efforts to modernize infrastructure, and ongoing battle against insecurity, though his administration also drew criticism over economic challenges and human rights issues.

At the time of his death, Buhari had been receiving medical care in the United Kingdom. Reports suggest he had been seeking treatment for weeks prior. Further details surrounding the circumstances of his passing have not yet been disclosed.

Funeral arrangements, in keeping with Islamic rites and family wishes, are expected to be announced in due course. Tributes and condolences have already begun flowing in from across Nigeria and the international community, with many recognizing him as a significant figure in the nation’s political and democratic evolution.
