The remarks drew strong criticism, including from Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum, who called the content “very sexist” and suggested that Hernández still has much to learn about gender equality.
The FMF’s Gender and Diversity Commission, along with Liga MX and Liga MX Femenil, deemed his comments to be a form of media violence and a violation of gender equality policies. As a result, Hernández received a financial penalty and an official warning, with the possibility of further sanctions if similar behavior occurs again.
Chivas, the club Hernández rejoined in January 2024, also took disciplinary action, stating that the remarks violated its internal code and values. The club emphasized its rejection of stereotypes that restrict individual rights and freedoms.
In response, Hernández issued a public apology, expressing regret for any confusion or discomfort his words may have caused. He stated it was never his intention to offend or divide and welcomed the opportunity to learn and grow from the incident.
Hernández, now 37, is Mexico’s all-time top scorer with 52 goals. Since his return to Chivas, he has scored only twice in more than two dozen matches, adding to criticism surrounding both his form and recent public behavior.
