Real Madrid have officially announced that Kylian Mbappé will wear the iconic No. 10 jersey for the 2025–26 season, following the departure of Luka Modrić to AC Milan .
After arriving at the club last summer, Mbappé debuted in the No. 9 shirt, previously worn by Karim Benzema. Although he delivered a stellar campaign—scoring an unprecedented 44 goals in 59 appearances and claiming both the Pichichi Trophy and the European Golden Boot—Modrić’s exit paved the way for a symbolic jersey change .
The No. 10 at Real Madrid carries immense prestige, having been donned by greats such as Ferenc Puskás, Clarence Seedorf, Luís Figo, Michael Laudrup, Robinho, Mesut Özil—and most recently, Luka Modrić . Mbappé, who already wears the No. 10 for France, subtly confirmed the change with a minimalist post featuring just “10” on his X account. Moments later, the club’s official squad listing was updated to reflect the assignment .
This switch is seen as both a symbolic leadership nod and a strategic marketing decision. Officials reportedly planned in advance for Mbappé to eventually inherit the number once Modrić departed, emphasizing continuity across club and international representation .
With Mbappé now wearing the No. 10, the No. 9 jersey becomes available. Notable contenders include rising talent Endrick—expected to take the shirt naturally—or promising young striker Gonzalo, depending on squad roles under Xabi Alonso. No final decision has been announced yet .
