Mikel Arteta revealed that Viktor Gyökeres will be assessed ahead of Arsenal’s upcoming friendly against Tottenham in Hong Kong, following the Gunners’ 3–2 pre‑season victory over Newcastle in Singapore on July 27, 2025 . “We will assess him tomorrow to ensure he reaches the required levels. We’re not going to hold him back—we’ll speak with the medical team, but our intention is to get him up to speed and ready,” Arteta said when asked about the new signing’s availability .
Ahead of the match, Arsenal officially unveiled their new signing, Viktor Gyökeres, in front of the fans at the Singapore National Stadium. The Sweden international, donning the number 14 shirt, was introduced to thousands of supporters who greeted him with chants and shoulder-to-shoulder masks in homage to his celebrated goal celebration. He did not feature in the match .
During the game, Newcastle took the lead early through debutant Anthony Elanga in the sixth minute. Arsenal responded with a first-half equaliser from Mikel Merino and then took the lead courtesy of an own goal by Alex Murphy. Jacob Murphy levelled for Newcastle in the second half, but Martin Ødegaard sealed the win when he converted a late penalty, won by impressive play from 15-year-old Max Dowman .
Gyökeres recently completed a transfer from Sporting Lisbon on a five-year contract reportedly worth around £55–£63 million including add-ons . While he did not feature in this fixture, the club remains optimistic he will debut soon, should he pass the medical assessment and meet the required physical standards.
