Reports suggest Arsenal had actively courted him, even preparing to trigger his €58 million release clause and offering a lucrative salary, but their interest cooled when Barcelona appeared to take the lead. However, with Barca facing registration challenges and questions over guarantees, Arsenal briefly remained hopeful.
In Athletic’s announcement, Williams explained: “When decisions have to be made, for me, what weighs most is my heart. I’m where I want to be, with my people—this is my home.”
Barcelona’s pursuit faltered amid La Liga financial regulations and registration uncertainty, while Bayern Munich also entered the fray but failed to present a compelling offer. Despite personal terms apparently agreed with Barca and Williams’s own enthusiasm, the deal couldn't progress.
The new contract reportedly includes one of Athletic's longest terms and a release clause raised to approximately €90 million—up more than 50% from the previous €58 million.
Since debuting in 2021, Williams has made around 167 appearances, scored 31 goals, and contributed significantly to Athletic’s 2024 Copa del Rey triumph. On the international stage, he scored in Spain’s Euro 2024 final and was named Player of the Match.
Athletic Club’s decision to tie down Williams until 2035—amid interest from Arsenal, Barcelona, and Bayern—marks a significant statement of ambition. It cements Williams’s place at San Mamés and signals the club’s commitment to retaining its homegrown talent in the face of Europe's elite competition.
