Cole Palmer praised Estêvão Willian following Chelsea’s 2–1 victory over Palmeiras in the FIFA Club World Cup quarter-final held on July 4, 2025, in Philadelphia.
Palmer gave Chelsea an early lead in the 16th minute with a composed finish after a well-worked build-up. Palmeiras responded in the second half when Estêvão dazzled with a brilliant solo goal in the 53rd minute, striking a powerful shot off the underside of the bar. The winning moment came in the 83rd minute when Malo Gusto’s corner deflected off Palmeiras defender Agustín Giay and goalkeeper Weverton, resulting in an own goal that secured Chelsea’s spot in the semi-finals against Fluminense.

After the match, Palmer revealed his interaction with Estêvão, who is set to join Chelsea. “He’s a top player and only young. When he comes to England, people need to give him time to adapt to the culture and the language,” Palmer said. He added with a laugh, “I told him we look forward to seeing him for training, but he didn’t understand a single word I said.”

Despite the language barrier, the moment between the two players was heartfelt. Palmer later got teammate Dário Essugo to help translate, and the two shared a warm exchange, even swapping shirts at full-time.

Estêvão, who was named Player of the Match, described the game as an emotional farewell to Palmeiras. He expressed gratitude to coach Abel Ferreira and the club for helping him develop into the player he is today. “Palmeiras opened doors for me... I will carry them in my heart forever,” he said.

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca also spoke highly of Estêvão, calling him a “huge talent” and shared his excitement about the youngster's arrival at Stamford Bridge. Estêvão is expected to officially join the Chelsea squad later this month as preparations continue for the new season.
