Manchester United Secure Signing of Emerging Talent Diego León
Manchester, 5 July 2025 – Manchester United has officially announced the acquisition of 18-year-old Paraguayan left-back Diego León from Cerro Porteño . The young defender joins as the club’s second summer signing, following the arrival of Matheus Cunha .
León, a current Paraguay U20 international, made 33 senior appearances for Cerro Porteño, contributing four goals . He celebrated his 18th birthday in April and was officially registered in Manchester this weekend .
Described by the club as a “exciting emerging talent,” United will support León through a development programme, involving both the first team and the academy, to aid his transition to life and football in England .
Standing at approximately 1.77 m (5 ft 10 in), León operates primarily as a left-back or left wing-back . During his debut season with Cerro Porteño, he scored the winning goal over Sportivo Ameliano and demonstrated his technical ability and attacking flair . Having modeled his style on former Real Madrid legend Marcelo, he is celebrated for his forward runs, precise crosses, and physical strength . However, observers note his defensive positioning remains an area for refinement .
A deal was initially secured in January, but due to age regulations, Leon remained in Paraguay until turning 18 . Reports indicate the transfer fee was approximately £3.2 million upfront, potentially rising to £7 million with add-ons .
León will arrive in Manchester ahead of the start of pre-season training. With key left-back Luke Shaw out injured and the club having signed Patrick Dorgu, León adds much-needed depth and youthful promise to the left side of defence .
