Super Falcons delivered a dominant performance on Friday night, securing a resounding 5–0 victory over Zambia in the quarter-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca.
Nigeria took control early in the match, with captain Osinachi Ohale heading home a well-placed free kick from Esther Okoronkwo in the 2nd minute. Okoronkwo added her name to the scoresheet in the 33rd minute, calmly finishing off a flowing attacking move.
Chinwendu Ihezuo made it 3–0 just before half-time, reacting quickly to a loose ball in the box. The Falcons’ dominance continued in the second half as Oluwatosin Demehin powered in a header from another set piece in the 68th minute. Substitute Folashade Ijamilusi completed the rout with a stoppage-time goal, sealing an emphatic win for the nine-time champions.
Despite some attacking moments from Zambia’s Barbra Banda and Grace Chanda, Nigeria’s defence, led by Ashleigh Plumptre, remained solid throughout the match.
The result sends Nigeria through to the semi-finals as they aim for a record-extending 10th WAFCON title. They now await the winner of the South Africa vs Senegal clash.
