A 72-year-old Brighton & Hove Albion supporter has died after suffering a medical emergency during the second half of the club’s opening Premier League fixture of the season against Fulham at the Amex Stadium.
The incident occurred in the upper tier of the East Stand, where the man received prolonged CPR and defibrillation from the club’s medical team, South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics, St John Ambulance staff, and the crowd doctor. Despite their best efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after the match concluded, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
Chief executive Paul Barber described the event as “an incredibly sad end to the match” and extended the club’s “deepest sympathies and condolences” to the man’s family and friends. He also acknowledged the emotional impact on nearby supporters and staff, assuring that those affected will be offered appropriate support in the coming days.
The club confirmed that, in consultation with Sussex Police and the Premier League, the decision was made not to halt the match. Officials felt that stopping play could have disrupted resuscitation efforts and potentially complicated any urgent transfer to hospital had the patient responded. Privacy screens were erected promptly to shield the scene from view.
