FC Barcelona has officially confirmed the departure of central defender Iñigo Martínez, who will join Saudi Arabia’s Al-Nassr. Though he was under contract until 2026, his exit had been anticipated since his most recent contract renewal, which included a release clause permitting his departure under specific conditions .
The club has expressed its gratitude to Martínez for his professionalism, dedication, and leadership throughout his two seasons in the blue-and-claret shirt. During his tenure, he played 71 matches—61 as a starter—and contributed with three goals and five assists, helping the team secure a domestic treble: La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Supercopa de España .
From a financial standpoint, his departure significantly alleviates the club's wage burden—freeing up approximately €14 million in salary space. However, questions remain about Barcelona’s ability to fully comply with La Liga’s stringent 1:1 financial regulations, as the club continues to explore further fiscal adjustments .
On the sporting side, head coach Hansi Flick described Martínez’s exit as “a very tough blow,” underscoring the defender’s importance in forming one of Europe's most formidable center-back partnerships alongside Pau Cubarsí. Despite the setback, Flick will not seek a direct replacement; instead, he intends to rely on existing options—Cubarsí, Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Eric García—with Jules Koundé and Gerard Martín offering additional flexibility in defensive roles .
Moreover, Martínez’s departure opens the door for emerging talents. Promising left-back Jofre Torrents, who impressed during Barcelona’s pre-season tour in Asia, is expected to see increased opportunities as a potential backup to Alejandro Baldé .
