Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a deal worth up to £43 million, comprising an initial £39m fee plus £4m in performance-related add-ons.
The 24-year-old England Under-21 international has signed a five-year contract at St James’ Park and will wear the No. 41 shirt, the same number he donned at Villa.
Ramsey, a product of Villa’s academy, made 167 appearances and scored 17 goals for his boyhood club since his senior debut in 2019. His departure represents pure profit for Aston Villa under Premier League financial regulations, aiding their compliance with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
Speaking after the announcement, Ramsey described the move as a “huge step” in his career:
“It’s been a whirlwind few days, but I’m delighted to be here. As soon as I knew the manager was interested, the decision was easy. Newcastle’s energy, athleticism, and passionate fans make this an exciting place to play.”
Manager Eddie Howe has long admired Ramsey’s versatility, with the midfielder capable of operating across central and wide positions. He becomes Newcastle’s fourth major signing of the summer, following Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw, and Aaron Ramsdale.
While Ramsey will not feature in Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Aston Villa at Villa Park due to the timing of the transfer, his arrival is seen as a significant boost ahead of a demanding season that includes both domestic and Champions League campaigns.
