FIRS Mourns Loss of Senior Staff in Afriland Towers Fire Tragedy

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has expressed profound grief over the tragic loss of four senior staff members in the fire incident that engulfed Afriland Towers on Broad Street, Lagos, on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

According to official reports, the blaze originated in the building’s inverter room located in the basement and rapidly spread across multiple floors, trapping several occupants inside the high-rise commercial complex. Emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, alongside other agencies, battled the inferno and carried out rescue operations throughout the day.

The deceased FIRS officials were reportedly stationed on the sixth and seventh floors of the tower at the time of the incident. Their identities have since been confirmed by the agency’s spokesperson, who described the loss as “devastating and deeply personal”.

In a statement, the FIRS extended condolences to the families of the victims and pledged support during this difficult time. “These individuals were not just colleagues—they were dedicated public servants whose contributions to the nation’s revenue system were invaluable,” the agency noted.

The fire also claimed the lives of staff members from other organizations housed within Afriland Towers, including the United Bank for Africa (UBA), whose chairman, Tony Elumelu, described the tragedy as “painful and irreplaceable”.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, and authorities have vowed to ensure accountability and improved safety measures in commercial buildings across Lagos Island.
