Victor Pálsson gave Iceland the lead just before halftime when he capitalised on a loose delivery from a free kick. In the second half, France responded through Christopher Nkunku in the 63rd minute. Only five minutes later, Jean-Philippe Mateta scored his first goal for the national team to put Les Bleus ahead. However, Iceland equalised again in the 70th minute via Kristian Hlynsson, who finished a swift counter-attack to deny France victory.
Despite the draw, France retains the top position in Group D with 10 points from four matches—three points clear of Ukraine. Coach Didier Deschamps expressed frustration at the timing of the concession, saying the team “did the hard part” but lost focus before the second goal.
France now look ahead to a pivotal home match against Ukraine on November 13, which could prove decisive in their qualification run.
