According to reports from Reuters and TalkSport, the 38-year-old ex-winger, who was part of the Real Madrid squad that won the La Liga title in 2008, is currently receiving treatment and “in good hands.”
His organisation, FC De Rebellen—a group made up of former Dutch and Belgian footballers—confirmed the news in an Instagram post, writing: “Last Friday, Royston Drenthe suffered a stroke. He is currently being taken good care of and is in good hands.”
They also asked the public to respect his family’s privacy during this difficult time as they focus on his recovery.
Drenthe began his career at Feyenoord before making a high-profile move to Real Madrid in 2007. He later played for Everton, Reading, and Sheffield Wednesday, before retiring from professional football in 2023.
