South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns ran riot in Abuja, thrashing Nigerian hopefuls Remo Stars 5–1 in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round first leg.
Tashreeq Matthews fired the visitors ahead in the 12th minute, before Peter Shalulile doubled the advantage just before half-time. Miguel Reisinho extended the lead in the second half, followed by goals from Arthur Sales and Katlego Ntsabeleng to seal a dominant win for Sundowns.
Remo Stars grabbed a consolation through Samson Olasupo in the 77th minute, but it did little to ease the damage on home soil. With this emphatic result, Sundowns take a commanding 5–1 lead into the return leg as Remo Stars face an uphill battle to keep their continental dreams alive.
