In his pre-match press conference, Maresca explained that Delap had only just resumed training after being sidelined with a hamstring injury earlier in the season. He said, “Liam took part in the session yesterday with the team for the first time. He is not going to be available for tomorrow but probably for the next one.”
Chelsea approach the weekend encounter in strong form following a convincing 5-1 victory in the Champions League. However, Delap’s absence means the Blues will have to depend on alternative attacking options.
Maresca added that the young striker could be back in contention for the following game — a League Cup tie at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers — as he continues his recovery process.
