Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was the star of the show as Gabon edged Gambia 4–3 in a thrilling World Cup qualifier. The former Arsenal striker scored all four goals for his side, but his night ended controversially after he received a red card late in the match.
Gabon now sit on 22 points in their group, just one behind Ivory Coast, who have 23. The team still has a chance to reach their first-ever World Cup. A home victory against Burundi in the final group game, combined with Ivory Coast failing to win against Kenya, would see Gabon finish top of the group. Even if they fall short, they may still qualify as one of the best runners-up.
Aubameyang’s remarkable display highlights his importance to Gabon’s campaign. After initially retiring from international football in 2022, he returned in 2023 following discussions with Gabonese President Ali Bongo Ondimba. With four goals against Gambia, he continues to extend his record as Gabon’s all-time leading scorer, now with 35 goals in 82 appearances.
