Popular US Actor Darius McCrary Arrested Near U.S.–Mexico Border

Darius McCrary, best known for his portrayal of Eddie Winslow on the 1990s sitcom Family Matters, was arrested by U.S. Border Patrol agents on October 5, 2025, near the U.S.–Mexico border in California on an outstanding felony warrant. The warrant reportedly originated from Michigan and stemmed from McCrary’s failure to appear in court over unpaid child support obligations. The arrest booking was classified as a “fugitive arrest,” and McCrary is being held without bail at a San Diego County jail. His first hearing is scheduled for October 15.

According to his representative, McCrary was unaware of the warrant. She claimed that the court notice was sent to a P.O. Box he had not been monitoring because he was ill with COVID-19 at the time and that he had only three days’ notice to appear in court. The representative also stated that McCrary was in the border area as part of a philanthropic project to help build housing for people experiencing homelessness in Tijuana, Mexico.

McCrary’s legal history includes prior arrests related to unpaid child support. In 2015, he was arrested for failing to pay support and settled the matter by paying the amount owed. In November 2023, he was again arrested over alleged overdue payments exceeding $52,000. He pleaded not guilty and was released on bond, subject to GPS monitoring. Following his divorce from Tammy Brawner—filed in 2017 and finalized in February 2019—McCrary was ordered to pay monthly child support, attend substance abuse and batterer intervention programs, and adhere to visitation arrangements.

While multiple reputable outlets, including People, Entertainment Weekly, and Page Six, have reported on McCrary’s arrest and the associated felony warrant, some details remain claims and have not yet been independently corroborated by official court documents or border patrol statements. McCrary’s representative’s account regarding his illness, failure to check his P.O. Box, and lack of knowledge of the warrant has not been verified by the courts. The precise felony charges, beyond the broad label of “out-of-state warrant” or “fugitive arrest,” have not been publicly detailed, and there has been no official response from the court or Border Patrol regarding the allegations or the decision to deny bail.
