Werder Bremen and the Super Eagles will be without defender Felix Agu for several months after confirming that the Nigerian international has undergone successful surgery to repair a syndesmosis ligament injury—commonly referred to as a high ankle sprain.

Agu sustained the injury during a recent Bundesliga match against St. Pauli. Medical examinations confirmed damage to the syndesmosis complex, prompting the decision to perform surgical intervention.

Werder Bremen issued a statement alongside images from the hospital, confirming that the procedure was successful and that Agu has begun his rehabilitation program under club supervision. They further noted that the 24-year-old will recover at the club’s training facility.

The timing of the injury is especially unfortunate, as Agu had been named in the Nigeria squad for matchdays 9 and 10 of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin, though he was later withdrawn due to his injury. There is growing concern that he may miss the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, depending on his recovery timeline and match fitness.
