France head coach Didier Deschamps provided an update on Kylian Mbappé's condition following the team's 3-0 victory against Azerbaijan in a World Cup qualifying match on October 10, 2025. Mbappé, who had been managing a minor ankle issue, scored in the first half but was substituted in the 83rd minute after appearing to aggravate the injury.
The match ended with France defeating Azerbaijan 3-0. Mbappé opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, extending his scoring streak to 10 consecutive matches for club and country. Adrien Rabiot added a second goal in the 69th minute, assisted by Mbappé, while Florian Thauvin sealed the win with a goal in the 85th minute, marking his return to the national team with a goal.
After the match, Deschamps addressed concerns about Mbappé's fitness: “He received another blow to the same ankle. The pain decreases when he rests. In a match, contacts are inevitably going to happen. We will assess it afterward. He has discomfort that is not ideal for him.” He emphasized that while the injury was concerning, it was not deemed serious, and the medical staff would continue to monitor Mbappé's condition in the coming days.
Despite missing several key players due to injury, France maintained their perfect record in Group D of the qualifiers, securing nine points from three matches. Azerbaijan remained at the bottom of the group with one point.
France's next match is against Iceland, where they have the opportunity to further solidify their position in the group. The team's performance, particularly in the second half, was commendable, with improved ball movement and clinical finishing. Deschamps will be hopeful that Mbappé's injury does not hinder his availability for upcoming fixtures.
