The team’s chartered ValueJet aircraft had stopped in Luanda for refueling before beginning the final leg of the journey to Uyo. However, approximately 15–25 minutes into the flight, the pilot abruptly returned to Luanda after a serious crack developed in the cockpit windshield, which distorted the view and disrupted what had been a smooth flight.
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed that the pilot acted prudently in guiding the plane safely back to Luanda. At present, the NFF and relevant agencies are arranging for a replacement aircraft, while pursuing overflight and landing clearances to complete the journey. This delay has disrupted the Super Eagles’ travel plans ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixture in Uyo.
On the sporting front, Nigeria secured a 2-1 victory over Lesotho in their match yesterday, keeping alive their slim hopes of World Cup qualification. Their next and decisive match is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at 5:00 p.m. (Nigeria time) against Benin Republic at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo. Nigeria must win and hope for favorable outcomes in other group matches to advance.
