Venezuelan opposition figure María Corina Machado has been honored with the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of her steadfast advocacy for democracy in Venezuela.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee commended her as “a brave and devoted champion of peace,” citing her “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”
Despite having to live in hiding for parts of the past year due to threats to her safety, Machado has remained in Venezuela and continued her activism. Her resilience has inspired many, especially as she was barred from running for president in 2024 by Venezuelan courts.
