Anthony Joshua Recovers in Hospital After Car Crash Claims Friends' Lives

Anthony Joshua, the British-Nigerian boxer, is currently recovering at Duchess International Hospital in Nigeria after a car crash on December 29, 2025, that claimed the lives of two close friends and team members, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele. The accident occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and preliminary investigations suggest excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as probable causes.

Joshua, 36, was seated in the back of a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck, sustaining minor injuries. He was taken to the hospital for observation and is expected to spend New Year's Eve there. Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has visited Joshua, conveying condolences and wishing him a speedy recovery.

The boxing community is mourning the loss of Ghami, Joshua's strength and conditioning coach, and Ayodele, his personal trainer. Tributes have poured in from fellow boxers, including Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko, praising Joshua's resilience and the deceased friends' contributions to his career.

Joshua had recently defeated Jake Paul in a heavyweight bout in Miami and was on holiday in Nigeria, visiting family and reconnecting with his roots. His promoter, Eddie Hearn, confirmed Joshua is stable and receiving best care.
