ANGEL DI MARIA has revealed constant criticism from Louis Van Gaal led to him quitting Manchester United.

The Argentine ace, 31, spent one season at Old Trafford after he joined from Real Madrid for a record-breaking £59.7 million fee.

He made just 27 Premier League appearances for the Reds before he joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2015.

Di Maria did not fit into Van Gaal's preferred style of play and he has finally lifted the lid on where it all went wrong.

He told Sports France: "I was at Manchester and everything was fine with Van Gaal during the first two months.

"After one fight, things weren't the same. The relationship wasn't the same."

Angel Di Maria became the most expensive player in English football when he signed for United

And the pacey winger revealed that the no-nonsense Dutch manager knocked his confidence with constant criticism.

He added: "The fight with Van Gaal occurred because he was always showing me bad and negative things and all that held me back. One day I fought with him.

"I told him I didn't want to see those things anymore, that I was doing things well and asked him why he wasn't showing me good things."

Di Maria was booed by the home fans when he returned to Old Trafford for PSG's last-16 clash against United last week.

He added: "Confidence is always another thing when you feel more at ease, and with the confidence to be able to play."
