Athletic Club has a number of contract concerns weighing on them for the upcoming seasons, but they have already resolved one of the biggest ones.
To keep highly regarded players Nico Williams and Oihan Sancet, Los Leones must engage in difficult negotiations. Their agreements are both up in 2024.
However, they revealed on Friday that manager Ernesto Vaverde, one of the best in Spain, had been extended. His previous contract had until this summer, but the new one will keep him there until 2024 as well.
Over the course of seven and a half seasons, Valverde has managed the most games for Athletic Club in club history, with a current total of 332.
Although Athletic had a difficult start to 2023, the former Barcelona manager has noticed a change. Athletic is currently in seventh place, but they are only two points behind Real Betis in fifth place and six points behind Atletico Madrid in the race for the Champions League spots. It is difficult to imagine where Athletic would have found a better applicant for the job.
