How Mikel Arteta convinced me to stay after being booed by Arsenal fans in 2019 - Granit Xhaka

Granit Xhaka said that Mikel Arteta got him to stay at Arsenal. The midfielder said that he was "gone" after fans booed him off the field in 2019.
During a match against Crystal Palace, the Swiss midfielder's career at the Emirates reached its lowest point.

When Xhaka was replaced by then-Arsenal manager Unai Emery, he was booed off by the fans. Xhaka responded by swearing at the fans and walking down the tunnel.

Following the incident, which resulted in Xhaka losing his position as captain of the club, it appeared as though his time in North London had come to an end.

Bein Sports heard from Xhaka that Arteta was the most important person who got him to stay.

‘There was one guy, his name is Mikel Arteta,' Xhaka said. 'I will always support him, it doesn’t matter what happens.

'Without him, I am 100 per cent sure I would not be in the club anymore.

'He knows that, I have a very good and honest relationship with him. It doesn’t matter what happens on the pitch, I will never ever be against him or say something against him.

'He deserves my respect, but the respect from my family as well. I was gone. I did not want to wear the shirt anymore. He gave me the feeling to do it again.

'I am very proud of myself to wear the shirt again with a lot of respect and love, hopefully we can end this with a trophy.'

After the incident, Xhaka and his family received abuse, and he claimed that people were unaware of how low he had fallen.

Additionally, he had been heavily linked with a move to Roma in 2021, but that reportedly fell through because the clubs could not agree on a fee.

This season, Arsenal had a five-point lead over champions Manchester City heading into the weekend's Premier League matches thanks to Xhaka's crucial role in the Gunners' title-chasing team.

Together with Thomas Partey in the middle of the field, the 30-year-old has started all 25 Premier League games for Arsenal.

He has also been a leader at Arsenal, where he led the team against City in the FA Cup fourth round last month.

Since joining Arsenal from Borussia Moenchengladbach in 2016, Xhaka has appeared in 283 games for the club.
