Ivan Toney and Yoane Wissa scored for Brentford as they defeated Southampton 2-0 at St. Mary's Stadium to clinch a league double against Southampton for the first time since the 1958–1959 campaign.
Brentford was hoping for a victory after Everton halted their 12-game league winning streak at the weekend. The visitors got off to a promising start when Kevin Schade tried to score on his first Brentford appearance, but his looping header missed the mark. Moreover, Gavin Bazunu, who was praised for his performance in Sunday's goalless draw with Manchester United, was called upon in the 20th minute and made a superb reaction save to save Bryan Mbuemo's left-footed shot.
Ivan Toney scored his first goal just after the halfway point, despite the Southampton goalkeeper's best efforts. Christian Nrgaard's head was on the receiving end of Mbuemo's inswinging corner when he skillfully flicked the ball for Toney to score.
The Saints didn't really have many noteworthy opportunities before the halftime break, but they came agonizingly close to scoring an equalizer just three minutes after the restart when Ché Adams had a goal-bound shot stopped by Aaron Hickey on the line. Theo Walcott and Paul Onuachu were then brought in from the bench to aid Southampton's frantic effort to get a goal.
As Wissa surged into the area and sent the ball beyond a helpless Bazunu in the seventh minute of stoppage time, the Bees secured all three points despite spending the entirety of the second half camped in their own half. After to their ninth home loss in the Premier League, the Saints are now at the very bottom of the standings. As all is going on, Brentford climbs up to ninth place and is still actively pursuing a spot in Europe.
