Even though the Argentinian's PSG contract expires this summer, he is still going strong in his advanced years.
On Friday night, Messi assisted Mbappe on his second goal as PSG defeated Angers SCO 2-1 to extend their lead atop the Ligue 1 standings.
His season total now stands at 15 assists, in addition to the 15 league goals he has scored this year. He has carried over his strong play from the World Cup into his club form.
Messi joined the other two players who have recorded 15 or more goals and 15 or more assists in a single season since the 2006–07 campaign, OptaJean noted on Twitter.
The other two players were none other than Kylian Mbappe, who set the record last season with 28 goals and 17 assists, and Eden Hazard, who set it in the 2011–12 season with 20 goals and 16 assists.
Lionel Messi may have struggled in his debut season outside of La Liga and without his old team Barcelona, only managing six goals and 15 assists.
Messi's future is still up in the air, though, as speculation of a move back to Barcelona intensifies as the summer transfer window draws near. The Rosario-born attacker's early exits from the Champions League in each of the last two seasons for PSG are undoubtedly a factor.
Messi will be searching for the ideal way to cap out one of the most remarkable and decorated careers of all time after winning the World Cup only four months ago.
