On Sunday, a man was arrested after attempting to climb the iconic Eiffel Tower, just hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympics, according to the Paris police.
Authorities were alerted to the situation around 14:45 local time (13:45 BST) when the man was spotted scaling the tower. Police responded promptly, intervening and taking the individual into custody. As of now, no further details have been released regarding the man's motivation or nationality.
Footage circulating on social media shows the man, who was shirtless, climbing the structure just above the Olympic rings that have been displayed on the tower throughout the summer games. In another video, the man is seen being escorted away by police, his hands cuffed behind his back. He can be heard saying to a bystander, “Bloody warm, innit?”
During the incident, French police evacuated the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower to ensure public safety.
The Eiffel Tower, which served as the centerpiece of the grand opening ceremony for the Olympics, was not scheduled to play a significant role in the closing ceremony later that evening.
