Christiannah was reported missing on August 19, 2024, after her family received a distressing message from her WhatsApp account. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of ₦1.5 million, giving her family a 24-hour ultimatum to pay. It was later discovered that Christiannah had sought refuge at the residence of Ayomide Adeleye, a 200-level student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), during a rainstorm. Ayomide, who was acquainted with Christiannah, attempted to assault her, and when she resisted, he fatally attacked her.

Ayomide was apprehended on September 1 by troops of the 174 Battalion of the Nigerian Army. Upon his arrest, he was found in possession of seven phones and incriminating evidence, including Christiannah's phone and bank details, as well as email exchanges between himself and Christiannah's family. During interrogation, Ayomide confessed to the crime and revealed that he had buried Christiannah's body at his family home.
