Nigerian Senate Condemns Inhumane Treatment of Super Eagles by Libyan Authorities
The Nigerian Senate has strongly denounced the ill-treatment of the Super Eagles by Libyan authorities during their recent visit for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin, described the treatment as "terrible and condemnable," emphasizing that sports should promote unity, competition, and brotherhood among nations.
Senator Jibrin stated, "This unfortunate incident is a stark reminder of the disregard for human dignity and the lack of respect for international norms." He added, "As the President of the Senate, I stand in solidarity with the Super Eagles, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), and the entire Nigerian football community in condemning this unjust treatment."
The Senate has urged the Libyan government to apologize to Nigeria for the "shameful behavior," which it says disregards human dignity and international norms. The upper legislative chamber has also called for a comprehensive investigation into the incident.
The Super Eagles had secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Libya in the first leg of the qualifier, with Fisayo Dele-Bashiru scoring the decisive goal in the 86th minute. However, the team's success was overshadowed by the harsh treatment they received from Libyan authorities.
President Bola Tinubu has also condemned the incident and called for sanctions against Libya. The Confederation of African Football has launched an investigation into the matter, and experts expect Libya to face severe consequences.
