St. Pauli dominated possession in the opening stages but couldn't capitalize on their chances. Dortmund struggled in the first half, with their best opportunity coming in stoppage time when Karim Adeyemi's shot went narrowly wide. After the break, Dortmund increased their intensity. In the 51st minute, Adeyemi assisted Serhou Guirassy, who scored his 14th league goal of the season. Seven minutes later, Adeyemi doubled the lead with a solo effort, outmuscling defender Philipp Treu and turning midfielder Eric Smith before scoring.
Despite late efforts from St. Pauli, including a long-range shot from substitute Danel Sinani that forced a save from goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, Dortmund maintained their lead. St. Pauli's fourth consecutive league defeat leaves them in 15th place, four points clear of VfL Bochum in the relegation playoff spot.
Dortmund's next challenge is a Champions League last-16 first-leg clash against Lille on Tuesday.
