Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic has delivered a scathing assessment of current Red Devils goalkeeper André Onana, following comments made by the Cameroonian ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League quarter-final first leg against Olympique Lyonnais.
The war of words erupted after Onana claimed that Manchester United are “way better” than Lyon. Matic, now at Lyon, did not take kindly to the remark and questioned Onana’s credibility to make such a statement.
“When you are one of the worst goalkeepers in Manchester United history, you need to take care what you're talking about,” Matic said in response.
“If it was Van der Sar, Schmeichel or De Gea saying that, OK… but Onana, he’s one of the worst.”
Matic, who made over 180 appearances for Manchester United between 2017 and 2022, suggested that Onana lacks the legacy and standing of previous goalkeeping greats at the club.
Onana, who joined United from Inter Milan in 2023 for £47 million, has had a mixed spell at Old Trafford, showing flashes of brilliance but also attracting criticism for several high-profile errors. In his response, the 28-year-old goalkeeper defended his record and pointed to his FA Cup win with the club.
“I respect every opponent and every club. But I’ve already won more with Manchester United than Matic ever did,” Onana reportedly said.
“We’ll do our talking on the pitch.”
The exchange has added further intrigue to the upcoming clash, with United currently unbeaten in UEFA competitions this season despite a disappointing 13th-place standing in the Premier League. Lyon, meanwhile, sits fifth in Ligue 1 and will look to capitalize on their home advantage.
