Nigerian football star Asisat Oshoala honored late Super Eagles legend Peter Rufai during the Super Falcons’ emphatic 3–0 victory over Tunisia in their opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Casablanca.
Oshoala wore a hand band bearing Rufai’s name, commemorating the iconic goalkeeper who passed away on July 3, 2025, at the age of 61. Rufai, a two-time World Cup veteran and 1994 AFCON champion, remains a towering figure in Nigerian football history.
The tribute was matched by impact. Just four minutes into the match, Oshoala headed home a pinpoint cross from Rinsola Babajide to give Nigeria an early lead. Babajide doubled the advantage on the stroke of halftime with a composed finish, before substitute Chinwendu Ihezuo sealed the win in the 84th minute with a left-footed strike.
The Super Falcons dominated from start to finish, with goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie barely tested and the defense marshaled confidently by Ashleigh Plumptre. The win marked Nigeria’s first-ever WAFCON victory over Tunisia and extended their unbeaten run against North African opponents.
