Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez delivered a heartfelt tribute to his late teammate Diogo Jota during the club’s first match since the tragic passing of the Portuguese forward.
The pre-season friendly against Preston North End at Deepdale was deeply emotional, marked by fans singing “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” a minute of silence, and Preston captain Ben Whiteman laying a wreath in memory of Jota. Liverpool also announced the retirement of Jota’s No. 20 jersey across all levels of the club.
Conor Bradley opened the scoring in the 33rd minute before Núñez came on at halftime and scored Liverpool’s second goal around the 53rd minute.
In tribute, he recreated two of Jota’s signature goal celebrations: the playful “baby shark” routine and the gaming-inspired pose mimicking a video game controller—acknowledging Jota’s passion for FIFA and video gaming.
Later, Cody Gakpo added a third goal and similarly enacted Jota’s iconic celebration.
The match concluded in a 3‑1 victory for Liverpool.
