Ex-Arsenal star Granit Xhaka is on the verge of completing a €20 million move to Premier League side Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen. The deal reportedly includes €15 million upfront and €5 million in potential add-ons.
The 32-year-old Swiss international is expected to undergo his medical in the UK before signing a long-term contract with the newly promoted club. Reports indicate the deal will keep him at Sunderland until 2028, with an option to extend for another year.
Xhaka, who captains Switzerland, played a crucial role in Bayer Leverkusen’s historic 2023–24 campaign, helping them win the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal while also reaching the Europa League final. Despite manager Erik ten Hag’s desire to retain him, Leverkusen ultimately agreed to the deal after Sunderland significantly increased their offer.
The midfielder previously spent seven seasons at Arsenal, making over 220 Premier League appearances and winning two FA Cups. His Premier League experience and leadership qualities are expected to play a vital role in strengthening Sunderland’s midfield as they return to the top flight.
Xhaka becomes Sunderland’s seventh summer signing under manager Régis Le Bris, joining the likes of Enzo Le Fée, Simon Adingra, and Reinildo Mandava in what has been an ambitious recruitment drive ahead of the new season.
