Nigeria has lost one of its football legends as former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has passed away at the age of 61.
Rufai, affectionately known as “Dodo Mayana,” reportedly died in Lagos in the early hours of Thursday, July 3, 2025, after a brief illness. His death has shocked the football community, especially as many were unaware of his health challenges.

Rufai’s national-team career spanned over a decade, earning him more than 60 appearances for the Super Eagles. He represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups—1994 in the United States and 1998 in France—and was part of the squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 1994. He also featured in earlier editions of the tournament, helping Nigeria finish as runners-up in 1984 and 1988.

At club level, Rufai had an illustrious career in Europe, playing in Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. He had stints with Lokeren, Beveren, Go Ahead Eagles, Farense, Deportivo La Coruña, and Hércules.

Following his retirement from professional football, Rufai dedicated himself to youth development in Nigeria, opening a goalkeeping academy to mentor aspiring players.

News of his passing has prompted tributes from across the football world. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) expressed its sorrow, describing him as a national icon whose legacy will not be forgotten. Former teammates, fans, and clubs have also paid their respects, remembering Rufai as a leader on and off the field.
