Anthony Gordon opened the scoring in the 32nd minute after Bruno Guimarães sent Jacob Murphy sprinting down the right wing. Murphy’s precise low cross found Gordon unmarked at the far post, where he calmly tapped the ball into the net to give the Magpies a deserved lead.
Harvey Barnes extended Newcastle’s advantage midway through the second half. Goalkeeper Nick Pope launched a quick throw that Barnes latched onto, charging forward before drilling a low, powerful shot into the far corner to make it 2–0.
The winger sealed his brace in the 83rd minute when Gordon slipped a clever pass behind the Benfica defence. Barnes showed composure as he slotted the ball past the onrushing goalkeeper, wrapping up a comfortable win for Eddie Howe’s side.
The result marked Newcastle’s second consecutive victory in the Champions League this season and their most convincing European home win in more than two decades.
