The incident occurred on Friday, November 21, at the Government Field in Okitipupa, where Obesere and his band had just concluded a performance honoring the deceased. Eyewitness accounts describe a sudden ambush by a group of suspected thugs, who descended on the performers, inflicting physical harm, damaging musical equipment, and fleeing with personal belongings, including a bag containing cash. One band member reportedly sustained a dislocated shoulder and possible stab wounds while attempting to protect the items.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Okitipupa Local Government Chairman Hon. Andrew Ogunsakin condemned the attack as "unfortunate and unacceptable," emphasizing that such acts of hooliganism have no place in the community. "Upon receiving the report on the unfortunate incident involving Fuji legend Abbas Akande Obesere, I immediately swung into action to ensure accountability and restore calm," Ogunsakin stated. He confirmed that the three suspects are currently in police custody, with some stolen items recovered, and investigations are underway to apprehend additional perpetrators.

Ogunsakin further announced plans to convene a meeting with Obesere's management team to address the matter comprehensively and bolster security measures for future public events. "This engagement aims to rebuild confidence and strengthen security protocols around public events within the local government," he added, reaffirming his administration's commitment to upholding peace, order, and the rule of law.

Obesere's media manager, Ayonla Obesere Althentic, recounted the ordeal, noting that the violence erupted mere moments after the performance ended. "Large groups of touts surrounded the area... I was beaten, my shoulder dislocated, and struck with a knife while attempting to get into the car," he detailed, highlighting the chaos that ensued despite attempts to de-escalate the situation.

The Ondo State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Funmilayo Odunlami, corroborated the arrests, stating that exhibits have been secured and a thorough probe is in progress to prevent similar occurrences. Fans and supporters of the veteran Fuji icon have taken to social media to express outrage and demand swift justice, with many praising the rapid response from local authorities.
