Africa Cup of Nations Switches to Four-Year Cycle

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will be held every four years starting from 2028, marking a significant shift from its traditional biennial format.

This decision aims to align African football with the global calendar, reducing conflicts with European club schedules and easing the burden on players.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe revealed that the change will take effect after the 2027 edition, hosted jointly by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, and a one-off tournament in 2028. The move is expected to increase the tournament's prestige and commercial value, attracting higher-tier sponsorships and broadcasting deals.

To fill the gap, CAF will introduce an annual African Nations League, starting in 2029, featuring all 54 African member nations. This new competition will provide regular high-level matches, easing pressure on players and clubs during congested seasons.

Motsepe emphasized that the decision prioritizes player welfare, stating, "I can't have players leaving their clubs in Europe mid-season. It's wrong." The change also aims to promote youth development and women's football in Africa.

The Africa Cup of Nations, first held in 1957, has been a cornerstone of African football, showcasing talent and cultural heritage. The tournament's new format is expected to enhance its global appeal and sustainability.
