Twelve miners were tragically killed by gunmen, suspected to be herdsmen, in Atosoh community, Fan District, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred on Tuesday night, December 17, 2025, when the attackers stormed a mining site and opened fire on the miners. The victims were buried in their community, and many others are still missing following the attack.
The Chairman of Berom Educational and Cultural Organisation (BECO), Dagallang Davott, confirmed the incident, stating that the gunmen attacked the miners while they were working at the site. The attack has raised concerns about security in the area, with the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYMA) urging the government to deploy more security forces to enforce a ban on open grazing and rescue the abducted victims.
The Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has reaffirmed his administration's commitment to deepening security collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces to ensure the safety of rural communities. The incident is part of a series of attacks in Plateau State, highlighting the need for increased security measures to protect citizens. The Nigerian Army has been informed about the incident, and efforts are ongoing to locate and rescue those abducted.
